Fashion Retail Merchandising – 12-Week Curriculum

Program Length: 12 Weeks • 240 Hours (Lecture + Lab)

The Fashion Retail Merchandising program at the Fashion Retail & Style Institute (FRASI) blends classroom instruction, lab work, and real-world projects. Students learn the business of fashion from the inside out—retail operations, merchandising, customer service, entrepreneurship, and e-commerce boutique development.

Week-by-Week Curriculum Overview

Week 1: Introduction to Retail, Merchandising & Fashion

Hours: 1–20 • Lecture: 15 • Lab: 5

Explore the foundations of the retail and fashion industries, why people wear clothing, how trends develop, and how retail fits into the fashion ecosystem. Students begin their business journals and participate in class discussions based on real-world retail examples.

Week 2: The Business of Retail

Hours: 21–40 • Lecture: 15 • Lab: 5

Dive into retail management, store operations, marketing strategies, loss prevention, pricing, and profit calculations. Students practice using retail math and complete a quiz/vocabulary assessment.

Week 3: Apparel Categories, Industry & Markets

Hours: 41–60 • Lecture: 15 • Lab: 5

Study women’s, men’s, children’s apparel, accessories, and cosmetics. Learn target markets, production processes, fashion marketing, and trend forecasting through discussions and case studies. Includes a 90-minute proctored exam.

Week 4: Visual Merchandising & Retail Buying Basics

Hours: 61–80 • Lecture: 15 • Lab: 5

Learn how visual merchandising, product presentation, and retail buying work together. Students explore window displays, color stories, mannequin styling, and the differences between various apparel retail formats.

Week 5: Customer Service & Sales

Hours: 81–100 • Lecture: 15 • Lab: 5

Prepare to excel in customer service and sales. Students learn the full customer life cycle, engagement strategies, handling challenges, teamwork, reading body language, and closing sales— all aligned with industry-recognized customer service and sales standards.

Week 6: Garment Terminology & Fashion Construction

Hours: 101–120 • Lecture: 15 • Lab: 5

Build a strong fashion vocabulary by learning silhouettes, necklines, sleeve types, and hemlines. Students analyze garment parts and construction, work on their Fashion Project, and complete a 90-minute proctored exam.

Week 7: Entrepreneurship & Small Business

Hours: 121–140 • Lecture: 15 • Lab: 5

Learn the fundamentals of starting and managing a small business: business plans, marketing, financial planning, and legal basics. Students continue building their Fashion Project and strengthen their entrepreneurial mindset and problem-solving skills.

Week 8: Wholesale, Merchandise Buying & Planning to Buy

Hours: 141–160 • Lecture: 15 • Lab: 5

Explore apparel production, wholesale distribution, and merchandise buying strategies. Students learn how to plan assortments and optimize buying decisions for successful fashion merchandising. Includes exams and quizzes.

Week 9: Personal Style, Aesthetics & Wardrobe Planning

Hours: 161–180 • Lecture: 15 • Lab: 5

Study color theory, design elements, and design principles while connecting them to personal style. Students practice wardrobe planning and develop visually cohesive, functional looks as part of their Fashion Project.

Week 10: Build Your Brand (E-Commerce Boutique Project)

Hours: 181–200 • Lab: 20

Fully immerse in brand-building. Students create a business plan, brand name, target market profile, and competitor analysis. This lab-centered week is dedicated to developing their E-commerce Boutique Project.

Week 11: Inventory & Financial Literacy

Hours: 201–220 • Lab: 20

Learn to select inventory for a specific target audience, source from wholesalers and manufacturers, and set pricing for profitability. Students continue building their E-commerce Boutique Project with a focus on inventory and financial decisions.

Week 12: Website Design & Online Boutique Launch

Hours: 221–240 • Lab: 20

Design and refine a fully functional online boutique. Using tools such as Canva, Adobe, CapCut, and website builders, students create a user-friendly, visually aligned e-commerce site and submit their final E-commerce Boutique Project.
